Books aimed at younger audiences that use illustrations or pictures to enhance the story. The images can be from countless mediums including paintings, drawings, or even photos. The Caldecott award is given annually for exceptional picture books.
Poetry is in art form that uses words as it's medium. There are countless forms of poetry including; lymirics, haikus, songs, odes, nonsense, and even epic poems like Dante's Inferno. Poems may or may not ryhme. They can be as short as a few words, or as long as an entire novel. Poems, like other forms of art, convey emotions, tell stories, serve as reminders and serve many other purposes.
Fantasy books use magic, supernatural elements, and many other seemingly impossible elements as primary forms of theme, plot and or setting. It differs from Science Fiction because it typically doesn't deal with scientific elements but rather magic and sorcery.

Similar to fantasy, however, the plot, theme and setting tend to be closer to scientifically possible or plausible. This genre tends to revolve around space/time travel or other, distant planets.
A form of passing on culture and stories of that culture. Can be told through song, dance, stories, pictures and other interpretive mediums. Usually extoles the culture that it is about and is often exagerated to emphasize desirable qualities within that culture, eg. courage, bravery, wisdom etc.
Stories that are not true but could be. The rules from the real world apply. There is no magic or other elements that would be present in Science Fiction or Fantasy. The stories and characters may be based on actual events, but they are not "true" enough to be non-fiction.
Like realistic fiction, the characters and events may be close to actual people and events, but not entirely true. They usually parallel a famous era or moment in history.
The true story of an individual's life. An autobiography is written by the person it is about. While a biography is written by a third party author.
A book in which the plot, setting, and people depicted therin are true. Usually historic or eyewitness accounts of actual events. May follow a group of people rather than an individual such as an autobiography or a biography.
Similar to comic books in that they use sequential images to tell stories. Graphic novels however typically are only one volume rather than a series. Unlike a serial comic, each graphic novel has a distinct beginning, middle and end.
A Japanese form of "Comic" books. They include all genres; action adventure, romance, comedy, childrens and even adult manga. They have existed since the 19th century but in their present form since about the end of the 2nd World War.
